I've just returned from a 3 week vacation on Oahu.

I've been over every year for the last 14 years and miss it more and more each time I come home.

Such a special place ! Your videos make me feel like I'm back there, at least for a short time.

Have been to many Walter J MacFarlane regattas on Waikiki Beach on 4th July over the years.

The blessing and the national and hawaiian anthems in the morning always gives me chicken skin.

Oh, btw, GO LANIKAI !!!

Hey Rox, You end some shows with the phrase "a hui ho", which if I'm not mistaken means, "until we are together again." So "hui" means "together", too? -JoeC

Hi Mark, Hui Dewey - that's cute. The canoe blessing was open to the public though not publicly announced except to club members. The canoes were rigged and dressed with leis and flowers. Prayers were said and we all joined in a circle for that. The kahuna and his helpers had a koa bowl of salt which they sprinkled on the canoes and people who wanted a special blessing were also able to line up to receive that. I made a little video out of still shots that you can view here. The kahuna is the man seated in the video with his back to us. We built this several years ago (ouch! it's dated...) as a demo for some of the features in Quicktime and the ability to "skin" the players. It is not technically for public release due to the use of mainstream music. Steve - I recognize that phrase, and that energy!

Rox, I'm enjoying the Hawaiian cultural lessons and "word of the day". Interesting that growing up in the midwest I also heard the same word often, but spelled diferently and with a much different meaning. I can still hear my grandparents responding to something they thought was a lie or bogus or just plain B.S. by saying " Oh, that's just a bunch of hooey". Don't know where it comes from. None the less, I'm happy to be a part of the Beachwalks hui and that's no hooey.

Aloha Rox,

I love your podcast and view it daily. Your mention of the blessing ceremony for your canoe caught my interest. I'm at work on a novel that contains a scene involving a canoe blessing, and, in the interest of getting it right, I'd like to know more about yours. Who attended, i.e. members only, members and family, the public? Who presided? Prayers? Chants? Were there offerings of fish and taro? I realize this might be a great imposition, but I'd appreciate any information you can share.

BTW, when I attended UH back in the eighties, the organizatioin for Library Science students was called Hui Dewey.
