Our wonderfully thoughtful and generous Beach Walk friend and Guardian Angel on The Reef, Susan, created this Happy Birthday video for our Lexi. Lexi is 8 years old today and continues to be one of the bright lights of our lives. She is also single-handedly responsible for getting us away from our computers and to the B E A C H most days. We have to spell it or else she goes into a circling tizzy when she hears the word spoken.

Mahalo Nui Loa (Thank You with Much Love) Susan, who also has a dog names Lexie (spelled differently) for your loving support, kindness, and thoughtfulness over the years.

We love you and consider ourselves blessed to have you in our life.

Beach Walk 708 – Losing is for Losers

So I am catching up on Survivor again. It is quite dramatic how losing a challenge becomes so self-defeating, and in itself seems to trigger a cascade of downward performance. I have been wondering what comes first in this chicken or egg scenario – losing or the loser’s mentality? If you really want to play the game, then recognize that _it is a game_ and winning or losing don’t matter. If you think of yourself as a competent gamer though, you build your psyche and that builds your body and your creativity and your connectivity. When we adopt the loser state of mind, the ability to compete collapses. Today’s title is a little strident – but it just seemed to fit.

Beach Walk 707 – The Race Against Racism

Do you think of yourself as a racist? Chances are no, That doesn’t mean you don’t have latent racism. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the NY Times that really helps to explain it.

Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously.

The cure? Out yourself when you have a racist thought, even if it’s embarrassing. It helps I think to flush up those legacy thoughts that have been passed down from generation to generation, just like, “put a coat on or you’ll catch a cold!” Paying attention and breaking the habit – that does work.

New and old are such loaded words – they can be used to manipulate our feelings if we are not paying attention. Like most things, I think it is case-specific. New is not always improved nor does the new necessarily invalidate the old.
