Beachwalks 770 – Memorial Day in the Pacific, Revisited

This Memorial Day rerun is one of our favorites. It has a timeless message and Shane’s shooting and editing is evocative and powerful.

We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true essence of Beach Walks – even though it was not filmed on a beach! It was completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. Today’s show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this “punchbowl” of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos. May all who died suffering, rest in peace today.

If this military topic resonates with you, may I suggest our 7-episode series filmed on the USS Nimitz, where Rox, a former anti-Vietnam war protester, spends the night with 4500 US Navy sailors and air force fighter pilots.

Hawaiian words:
Puowaina: hill of sacrifice
Kaua: war
Kapu: taboo
Maluhia: peace

Thanks Rox. This remains as one of my favorite episodes. I am also looking forward to the last costly sacrifice to be laid upon the altar of Freedom.

  2. Aloha again, Rox! Really enjoyed this re-run. Definitely one of the best episodes.

I was thinking about Beachwalks today, and I was thinking that even if you guys can only do 1 new episode every couple weeks, it would still be wonderful. I know you guys are busy, but I just thought I’d let you know that I still love the show. :)

Even if it’s just a short video of walking/exploring along the coast, it still helps us get a taste of the Aloha spirit :)

  3. @Stephen – That was such a beautifully stated comment. Thank you so much.

@Andrew – I hear you and I agree. Ever so slowly, we are moving in that direction. I am thinking once a week for a main episode, then possibly some photo posts, short blogs, random things in the interstitial time. Our new design is going live in a few days. I hope that kicks the tire of the universe and we get going again!

  4. Whoa! The new site is LOVELY. “A little Aloha every day”, indeed!

Also, I thought I’d give you a heads up on a typo. In the footer, you have “The Beach Walks theme was customized by Bare Feed Studios LLC.” and I think you mean Bare FEET not Feed :)

Unless you’re going to start selling delicious Hawaiian snacks. That’s it, isn’t!? I wonder what a “Rox bar” would contain… ;)

  5. @Andrew! You are FIRST! Thanks for your comments – I fixed the typo in the footer.

As for a Rox Bar, hmmm, I would offer stuff made with limes from our abundant tree…Shane makes a great strawberry guava limeade!
