Does this story feel good? It pays to pay attention to the words coming out of your mouth.

We use words all day everyday yet rarely stop to feel the energy they pack. I think it is the energy that causes confusion, less than the definition sometimes. We assume others think words feel the same way but they often don't! We assume that a "story is just a story" but it's not! It is also the energy from that story. I aim for feel-good energy, so that determines what stories I choose to tell or not these days. What about you? Does re-telling that story, no matter how righteous, make you feel bettor or worse? If you connect with the energy, it may influence where your mouth and mind go today.

Beach Walk 741 – Silence is Divine

I went on a 5-day silent intensive with Lola Jones a few weeks ago. For me it was pure heaven. I have in the past done 24 hours of silence on my birthday, and loved the clarity I experienced. To be able to ignore all others and go within myself for listening, for sharing, for counsel, was very powerful. There is a lot of noise, especially in my work on the social web (twitter, etc) And much as I love it, I was yearning to talk to the divine, to God directly. I can say that the moment we dropped into silence, having prepared for over 2 weeks, my mind came alive with conversation and insight, as if I were seeing my wise best friend after a very long absence.

Curiously enough, I still became quite close to the others on the retreat. We shared the energy of this experience - far more powerful than sharing words, which fail me so much of the time. There was more to this retreat that I will talk about later. For now, I offer up silence as a way to connect with your #1 - your large self, the divine you. And then you become such a gift to others.

Our car is 6.5 yrs old but has only 40,000 miles (eh - living on an island!) I have way more miles in my frequent flier accounts than the odometer of the Ford Escape.

Statistics can prove anything. Old Thinking: That’s bad! New Thinking: Use math to my advantage, to help me feel better, so I become untethered to what is holding me back.

Not to lie or manipulate per se, but to use .5 as half full, OR half empty. Both are true. Which interpretation feels better for me for now?

I personally value emptiness as much as fullness - it all depends on the situation.

Freedom and happiness really influence my views on life and what I choose to let go of in order to have the freedom and the happiness.

This whole thread this week actually started with someone in my yoga class complaining about dirty hand prints on the mirrors...and off my mind went to energy discrepancies, to rules that can't be followed, to how powerful negotiation is and we can't have negotiation if we stay stuck in a world of black and white, constructed somewhere in the past.

We watched an episode of The Iconoclasts last night with surfer Laird Hamilton and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder. Both are celebrities of course, and they also are living their true natures, deeply and truly. What if permission isn't required to be yourself? What if the part of us we think is the broken or odd part is actually the truest part? Food for thought for Monday.

I read a study showing that people who were paid to do a task over time lost interest in the task. It's easy to generalize about money from that, but also in play is the idea of external motivation vs. internal motivation. Some people love money and are highly motivated to get more of it. (You can find them on Wall Street LOL.) Others, not so much. What about you, do you like money?

Beach Walk 684 – Sorting Out Travel Energy

Seems the more I travel the easier it is for me to get cranky. Today, a RT fare from HNL to DTW to HNL cost $700 but a one-way fare cost $1100! That is not about fuel prices...

Anyway, I am learning to just pull my aura in and focus on myself, in the midst of the madding crowds (and unruly dogs!) And curiously, after an hour or so, people are not bothering me. It's this concept of "hui hui" or blending together without actually having to interact. We get trapped into thinking other people have to change for us to be happy or content, but really, sometimes all that's necessary is to just let it be and focus inward. Have you found this works for you?

Like many people, I set out an agenda for the day with a list of action items. Some items seem to take forever to get done though, and I have come to realize that not all tasks are created equal! They each actually require a certain level of attention and energy, and a select few really require a lot of focus and privacy, several hours free of any distractions. And many days I just don't have that large of a block of time.

I ran into my friend Sally Spencer (Beach Walk 528 ) and we got to talking about the broken hearts show (Beach Walk 668) and how compelling "victim energy" can be. And also how it can weaken a person, both body and spirit. It takes a special understanding to be compassionate and encouraging at the same time, rather than slipping into pity. Pity does not empower, in my book.

There were mysterious rainbows coming into my kitchen a while back. I traced it, and it gave me a chance to find a jewel in the rough - literally, in my neighbors yard. She was sending me rainbows and I was sending her stink eye. How often do you think a change in action is preceeded by a shift in consciousness?

One of my Twitter friends, @Akelatal, pointed me to a funny video the musician John Mayer did - a parody of himself. That led me to discovering that John had planned a tour this summer, expecting to have a new album. Well, no new album, but he is still doing the tour (see May 4th video), and seeing the one door closed is going to explore what might be behind another one.

He didn't freak out and succumb to the pressure to create for some arbitrary reason. I just love that.

W00t! The sun is out! Praise be to the weather. Let's face it: kind words and genuine praise just feel good. It is all too common when talented people take on a type of snobbery, as if they have earned some form of superiority. I much prefer to give my business to people who are competent and friendly, like the people I have recently discovered at J Salon. It is a good reminder to me as I myself can sometimes fall into the snob mode too. I talked about in Bitterness or Bliss.

At the beginning of a project, the world seems so full of potential. Being able to sustain that potential is another job altogether. One of the biggest lessons I have learned from doing Beach Walks is to know when to shut up! When we started, we discussed at length, "How often should we do a show?" At the time, Rocketboom was the only show that was going "daily" - that is M-F or 5 days a week. Most others were doing a weekly show, or sporadically according to multiple factors.

Since it is my practice to go to the beach every day (it is my time to de-stress!) we just started doing it every day. But we did not announce it as a daily show. That allowed us to explore the possibilities without the pressure to deliver on a promise we had no idea if we could keep. Though trust me, my little #2 was saying, "Oh of COURSE you can do it every day and think of the advantage you will get by telling everyone!!"

As it turned out, we did an episode every day for 400 days, then finally wised up! (From exhaustion...) I don't know how this stuff happened, I am just sharing what I have learned and I truly believe we have been able to sustain this not by promising that we will, but by NOT promising, and letting the energy feed us instead of the pressure draining us.

My cold came back, and so I am dressed for warmth (NOT fashion!) on this windy morning! There is the very old email that I received again last week from a very dear friend. Reading it this time I figured out why I didn't like it. It has that superior, "gottcha!" energy to it, and when examined, is actually based on a grammatical and logic errors. Read it yourself here and note the second comment from "Anon." This person came to the same conclusions as I did, Thinking outside the box is a great concept, but it rarely can be boiled down to something so simplistic and illogical as this little ditty. It just gives consultants a bad name. And really, we do much more useful stuff for our clients than make them feel stupid for not being able to guess the "correct" answer to juvenile, artificial constructs.

I have acquired a cold, and given that I am speaking at the Hawaii Advertising Federation in two days, my monkey mind and the full moon were really working me over in my sleep last night! Someone recently turned me on to the Alan Watts podcasts and I am enjoying them. Today on the treadmill I listened to one on the topic of "wonder." I think being able to entertain or wonder about things is a useful trait. Today's episode talks about the intrinsic dilemma of being smart as compared to leaving room for wondering, aka not knowing. Cheryl Colan recently wondered about a few things on her Hummingcrow videoblog and an enormous amount was learned by many people who contributed to the conversation both as speakers and listeners.
