I was hired by the Maui Visitors Bureau to assemble a team of new media bloggers and podcasters to participate in a week-long press trip to Maui. You are the lucky beneficiaries! In this first episode, filmed on-site at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, you get to meet my kumu hula, or hula teacher, Lopaka Bukoski. I think you will be mesmerized by his knowledge, his lyrical use of Hawaiian chanting and language, and of course by the dancing! In Hawaiʻi, many of the kumu are men, and just like in this class, both men and women are hula practitioners. By the way, you can see the staff of the Ritz-Carlton performing in the lobby especially for this weekend of Hawaiian culture at the end of this episode.

I am out of town and left my intended footage back on my main hard drive so I found this remnant from last winter! It's got a mood to it I think, and it's dedicated to dog lovers and long shadows everywhere. The sound is minimal - just the sweet romancing rhythms of gentle late afternoon waves. Co-mingled with Lexi's steady breathing, and a reminder from my friend Lola Jones to "breathe for pleasure." I hope we at Beach Walks can cast a shadow of grace on you today. We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true magic of Beach Walks. It is all completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side.Today's show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this "punchbowl" of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos.

As I have said many times before, "you meet the coolest people on the beach in Hawaiʻi!" Today we met Chris SantaCroce, aka Uber Shaman. It was his birthday, and he was starting the day at the beach with his puppies. He is a renaissance man - doing a number of things with his talents, and in a beach walks kind of way, spreading cheer and consciousness and geekiness to those he meets! To him, I was "that lady who walks the beach?" Yes, whenever I can!

I've been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis aka the Bikini Liberation Front. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have - it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Wayne Dyer once said something very apropos here: "What you think of me is none of my business." So if you find yourself wanting to wear a bikini this summer, it just may be that all that needs to get in shape is your mind!

Kaile is a regular visitor on Beach Walks, and she always brings a smile. Her dad Eric has been teaching her all about Hawaiian water sports, and so far she loves them all! In this episode, she paddles a 20' long one man outrigger canoe by herself, then hops on the back to head out to Flat Island and do some canoe surfing, with her awesome Dad, Eric. Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. Scroll down to the bottom of any page to see a list of all the categories. I love this style especially at the beach - somehow the magic of a minute can capture the serenity, the solitude, the vastness of the ocean, the playfulness of children - all without any words or planning at all.

I am practicing getting out of the way, and letting grace happen. Even Lexi stayed off camera for all but a few frames.

I cannot stop watching this episode! It was shot by moi, on the little Sanyo Xacti, there are water drops on the lens, it is a little over-exposed and a lot shaky, and of course I wanted more shots. But there was magic on the beach with Lexi this day. Then I heard this beautiful song on Dave's Lounge #106 and I had to put these ingredients together. Sometimes the energy is so much more than the technique - this is true for me, today.

This episode is dedicated to each of you loyal viewers, who so generously receive whatever we share, who shower us with love and affection, who even travel all the way from Canada (and soon from the UK I hope) and share some of your precious vacation time with us.

I don't know how to thank the Shanghai Restoration Project featuring Di Johnston for this beautiful song. I admire Barack Obama's ability to stay cool in public. David Brooks, of the New York Times, pointed this out to me - that in fact over two years of intense campaigning, he did not rant, did not get petty. This sense of resolve and non-ranting in public is a Hawaiian value, onipaʻa, from the the time of the overthrow of the monarchy. It was the motto of King Kamehameha V and Queen Liliʻuokalani. You will find that ranting in public will not get you many results here in the land of Aloha.

Dan Brown brought his HERO camera rig for the canoe, Mindy Clark of outriggercanoe.blogspot.com steered us, and friends Jeff and Carlos (you met them in Episode 369 along with Stacey (Episode 296) and Kaile (Episode 572, and I had a great trip. Secret Cameraman and Lexi rounded out the beach crew.

I am actually in New York as I write this, and it gave me so much pleasure to be immersed in some archive files and music I found when putting this episode together. If you've been to Hawaii you've likely heard this style of music either on the radio or while sipping mai tai's at the beach watching the sunset. Or maybe as you view Kanoe Miller dance the hula at the Halekulani Hotel. It conveys so beautifully the feeling of those swaying palm trees; I just love it.
