Programming code is just like cooking - sometimes you can guess the right mix and make a copy of something, but other times you need to know the original ingredients. Knowing when and how to tell the difference? Usually you only learn that on the back side, after you give it a try. I am not a big fan of the "fake it til you make it" school. I prefer authenticity and simple truths. Having said that, I also believe we are each free to try anything we want. If you are selling yourself as something you are not though, seller and buyer be aware.

First things first: Lexi is back!
Programming is a funny thing. What you see at the end is not how things are at the beginning. There is that "processing" that takes place in the middle. Even if you "view source" of a web page and see the HTML code, there is a good chance that at least some of that started off very differently. If you just copy what you see on the surface, you will miss some of the underlying functional magic! Of course reverse engineering can be fun too - and very informative.

Beach Walk 739 – Roz Savage Rowing Strong

Roz is one of those people you meet who is unforgettable. She has rowed solo across the Atlantic, and is now one-third of the way across the Pacific. She has been featured as a top adventurer by Outside Magazine. She recently met Al Gore as part of her mission is to help us wake up to the incredible pollution in the oceans among other environmental causes.

She departs from Hawaii at sunset on Sunday May 24th, and is having a local fundraiser at the ING DIRECT Cafe this Friday, May 22nd. Beach Walk 738 – Version Control

A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version.

Each of us is also an author of the master database - in addition to noticing others' changes we get to add our own! Voila - we end up with being able to "create our own reality."

Binary refers to how computers work: things basically boil down to ones and zeros. It makes for a very black and white appearance. Yet I am meeting more and more geeky guys who have an artful and spiritual side which I consider the opposite of 1-0. There are so many examples in life where drilled down deep or taken out wide, they become the opposite of themselves. You can check out the video on Byteful.com. "Internet Improves Communication" - or at least it does for some of the people some of the time. It can also intrude on other people's conversations, it can be full of falsehoods. Nonetheless in this episode I am talking about the upside of the internet's tools to connect us and add to our sense of community and ability to know more about each other. The Pew Internet Family and Life Project keeps finding that overall, in the aggregate, more people feel they have better communication with family members than before the internet. I know this to be very true in my family.

A while back we added a "plug-in" to thsi site, that shows the photo or avatar for each commenter, if you have created an account for yourself at www.gravatar.com. That way any blog that uses this plug-in can display your personal graphic., instead of showing the default pic chosen by the site owner. Your account is attached to your email address, which is always required when you want to leave a comment on a blog. Learn all about how to do it in this episode. I want to see your faces people!

I was recently invited to be one of 44 women in technology around the world who on August 11th, documented their day. The goal, organized by Sonja Bernhardt, was to illustrate women in every time zone with diverse technology careers so as to inspire young women to choose tech as a career path. Visit the web site where you can download PDF versions of the women in each region, and a formal book is being published as well. The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the awarding of a technology patent to Hedy Lamarr. Most of us know her as an actress, but she also helped invent technology that later was the basis of wifi!

Like many people, I set out an agenda for the day with a list of action items. Some items seem to take forever to get done though, and I have come to realize that not all tasks are created equal! They each actually require a certain level of attention and energy, and a select few really require a lot of focus and privacy, several hours free of any distractions. And many days I just don't have that large of a block of time.

You know, some things Shane and I just take for granted. Then we realize the ignorance of our ways. Such is the case on "embedding a video" on your web page. We thought "everyone" knew how to do that but we ere wrong. People have been emailing me asking how to do it, since I have mentioned it a few times. So let's have a little lesson at the beach today. Please let me know of this makes things clearer for you! And if not, ask your questions and we will do a part 2 as desired. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank blip.tv and viddler who both do an amazing job of hosting our videos for us.

Dealing with technology some days is just like people who explored the west centuries ago. YOu start off on a path that looks good, then encounter an obstacle. Sometimes you can get around it, sometimes you have to go back and start a new path. We've been dealing with that on Beach Walks eh? New software, breaks old paths. Some people have old version, some have new version. Not all upgrades are "backwards compatible." Sometimes files have to be re-encoded. Mahalo nui for being side by side adventurers with us!

Last week Barack Obama launched a new web site Fight the Smears to be able to respond to false attacks and politically-motivated slurs. It reminds of FactCheck.org which is a non-partisan site run by the Annenberg Foundation. In the old days, someone could start a rumor or make a claim and it was very difficult to combat it. Once it made it onto the airways, where media and communication was in the hands of a very few, one bad story could make or break a person.

Not anymore. Bloggers and journalists alike can put forth their own view of the "facts" and more than ever we can choose whom to believe and support. I like that. If you are interested in new media, please consider coming to the New Media Expo in August. Shane and I will be speaking there and it is the original annual event for professional podcasting.

Beach Walk 654 – I Don’t Believe in Karma

A new social web application I've been playing with called Plurk has a feature called karma points. You earn points by inviting people to join, posting messages, etc. In other words, you earn good karma by promoting their service. I find it irritating, and was discussing this with David Beaudoin, and such was the inspiration for this episode. I find karma to be a concept that mis-places blame where none is due, induces guilt when consciousness is more useful, and confuses genuine feedback aka cause and effect from any given situation with shoulds and should nots. What do you think about karma?

Otherwise, Plurk has some nice features, including a graphical timeline and threaded conversations.

One of the online videos we watch on our Apple TV at home is Cranky Geeks. They cover tech topics, but one of my favorite aspects of the show is the name. I just love how people are more and more choosing to be who they are. It was similar to what struck me in the Iconoclast episode with Laird Hamilton and Eddie Vedder I talked about in Beach Walk 573. But I am often slow to allow that same awareness into my personal relationships, especially with Shane aka Secret Cameraman aka my own Cranky Geek. Being true to who you are is not just for celebrities any more!

All this talk about multitasking...it's time to talk about its corollary - deep focus, being in the flow, in the zone. I find it a wonderful experience. And goodness knows there are plenty of things keeping us from being able to focus for periods of time.

Intel now has no email Fridays, when employees are encouraged not to use email for internal communications. I love that idea. I've taken to checking it far less often during the day, other wise it can easily turn into the tail wagging the dog.
