Many of you viewers know I took a 5-day silent retreat with Lola Jones last year and that in addition to all the technology and social media training and consulting I do, I also give Divine Openings. I was here in Austin to gain some more experience and knew that you Beach Walks viewers would appreciate some flow analogies, some water footage, and of course a few pups! (We were joined by Honey and Sophie on the hike.)

It's been a long time since we've been out on the water together. Our friends Eric, Stacey, and Kaile got a new 4-man outrigger canoe. Shane, Eric, and I took it out - saving a seat for you! I have missed being on the water, and hope you enjoy this episode - oh so Hawaii.

Kaile is a regular visitor on Beach Walks, and she always brings a smile. Her dad Eric has been teaching her all about Hawaiian water sports, and so far she loves them all! In this episode, she paddles a 20' long one man outrigger canoe by herself, then hops on the back to head out to Flat Island and do some canoe surfing, with her awesome Dad, Eric. This episode was filmed last Friday - what a perfect way to start a week! My friend Eric got some new Hero cameras and mounted them on his canoe. You get a great range of perspectives, and of course Eric's daughter Kaile, makes an appearance near the end. This is true Hawaiian lifestyle at its best. Join me as I chat with a friend of mine and Lanikai Canoe Club keiki coach Ricky Bermudez. The kids are 8 to 10 years old, and though the official season is over, Ricky still meets with them once a week on Sundays so they can continue paddling. That is truly the Aloha spirit in action.

Beauty Alert!!! We had friends visiting and borrowed the Foti family canoe, the Waʻa Lele, and paddled out the Mokulua Islands. The sunshine and the water and the colors are just beautiful! Dan Brown brought his HERO camera rig for the canoe, Mindy Clark of outriggercanoe.blogspot.com steered us, and friends Jeff and Carlos (you met them in Episode 369 along with Stacey (Episode 296) and Kaile (Episode 572, and I had a great trip. Secret Cameraman and Lexi rounded out the beach crew.

Several of my girlfriends are paddling this weekend the 41 miles from the island of Molokai to the island of Oʻahu. Duke is one of the many beloved Hawaiians who's spirit lives on with us and is celebrated every August with numerous water sports, all of which he excelled in. It was a beautiful, windy day, and our seven mile course from Kailua out around Mokolea Rock then back around Flat Island was challenging with 10-15 knot winds and 6-100 foot seas. Several canoes huli's (flipped over) and to their credit, the women righted them quickly and raced on.

It was the first time I have ever steered a race, and the first time I have ever steered in such daunting conditions! My crew was awesome - their confidence in me really helped me focus on the race and even enjoy myself some out there! We finished 4th out of 7 on the Women over-50 division. And 17th out of 29! I have a lot of learning to do and really look forward to it.

We raced under the Puakea Foundation, which was formed to support and honor Uncle Bobby Puakea, one of the rare remaining Hawaiians who knows how to go into the koa forest, select the right tree for a canoe, and over the course of several years, turn that tree into an 40-foot long traditional Polynesian outrigger canoe.

Competition has been in the air lately. Last Saturday was the Keiki Canoe Race (check out BW #425), American Idol winner was crowned, and our own videoblogger VlogDeathMatch music video contest winner was chosen (and not without some voting hanky panky.) As Jim and Charlie over at The Clip Show pointed out so cleverly, the rules for this contest were "Anything Goes." (This episode is rated R.)

Knowing the real rules can really change how you play and enjoy the game. It's not always as it appears. The "best" is subjective. And so on. Listen to the regular podcast here or listen in iTunes to see the accompanying photos in the rain.

Stress creates the silliest ideas. For a few hours I was going to sacrifice my twice a week outrigger paddling!

Fortunately, the whales spoke to me today and I came to my senses. But it points out how easy it is to let life's pressures (even the good ones) worm their way into my mind.
