A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version.

Each of us is also an author of the master database - in addition to noticing others' changes we get to add our own! Voila - we end up with being able to "create our own reality."

Updating my database: servers do it automatically every few minutes in some cases- the Internet is so smart, it knows we are constantly changing!

One of the things I am changing is feeling under-appreciated. I had this awareness that I get my satisfaction and pleasure from what I am doing in the moment. Yet I too often have front-loaded and back-loaded things with expectations. They impact the energy and the experience itself. I am choosing to give up that habit as I am a pleasure seeking person! I have re-purposed the pity pot I used to have into a compost bin where my "I am done with that" thoughts go to be reconfigured. Now I ask myself, “Rox, are things being done to you or for you?” This changes the energy in a heart beat. (Because I understand now it's all for me. And it's all good.)

I did a show on the latent racist tendencies many of us have a few weeks ago, Beach Walk 707, talking about how deeply racism (and other "-isms") reside within our subconscious. Exploring a little further, if we resist the notion and feel guilty or go into denial, then it lingers. Maybe not feeling so burdened or responsible for things before our time can free us to notice when we are acting under the influence, and choose to act differently now.

Beach Walk 716 – Volunteering to Vocation

More and more brave souls are leaving their "known worlds" for life as an adventure, the kind without a job for a safety net. Decades ago the book appeared, Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow that really knocked loose some hard-formed notions. Still, only one generation has grown up with that message, so it has barely made a dent in our global consciousness. Some people are using volunteering as a step in that direction. Such is the story of my friend BJ Wishinsky who is now at Anita Borg Institute and also Joe Philipson the photographer who is helping to define a whole new sector: social media photographer.

I'd also to thank the many volunteers who helped on Podcamp Hawaii. Judi Clark was both the WordCamp wrangler and the one who helped me track and acknowledge the many volunteers on that event. Kyle Nishioka was the tech and venue manage and did a wonderful job working with our many vendors. Shane Robinson aka Secret Cameraman built the website and set up all of the live streaming, plus created a very cool desktop application that allowed attendees to fill out evaluations on the spot while watching the live stream or following the Twitter stream!

Update: Twitter friend @carakitty also got a jpb at a Vet office after volunteering at the animal shelter.

A good example of the non-linear-ness of the process of change is Dr. James Prochaska's, Stages of Change Theory. He describes 5 stages of "change readiness" - each of which is responsive to certain processes or approaches. People who successfully change a behavior, will not usually progress through the stages in a straight line, but more in a spiral, relapsing some and then moving forward again.

When in fact, we hold the keys, and they are merely in our thoughts, not so much an external reality. One of the big myths floating around is that a person's position or title is comparable to their competence. Not always true! Like me, I am sure you can think of examples. Many choices in life really do boil down to personal preferences. "Who you know" really does matter, and that is not always a bad thing. This turned out to be relevant in a discussion I was having with several other women speakers. We are all going to be presenting at BlogWorldExpo next week, where there keynote speakers are all white male. It's an old issue, but one that is not all that easy to address. It is a combination of micro and macro energies in play. We have ideals we want to play out in the macro yet change happens in the micro of person to person relationships.

The majority of the time decision-makers go with the known quantity. This is seen by some as pandering by others as smart business to fill seats. Attendees too say they want something new, but are attracted to the known and familiar too. BlogHer is a women's blogging conference, and founder Elisa Camahort prides herself in pro-attractively seeking out new voices for each event. And BlogHer is growing and growing - priving that this too is a viable business model.

Are you more attracted to familiar big names or the chance to help discover new talent?

One of the profound yet not often acknowledged (by me) benefits of living in community with other people is that some choose to be the ones who go forward into the unknown, and those adventures ultimately inform and inspire the rest of us. I often think of myself as one of those explorers. Sometimes though, I feel pressure to have to always be on the front line. Relationships can be so illuminating and so misleading. I often find myself wishing the others would just change, instead of focusing on myself, which is the only change that really matters, the only change where I have any power or influence. Focusing the light on each of us by each of us a great way to start the week I think. It's a beautiful day and we are joined by my little friend Kaile, who is just learning to explore the power she has as one little person, in a relationship.

OK, so the world still has a lot of messes, but there are increasing signs of massive change for the better. Today, I want to mark a few of those, starting with the very profound and symbolic apology issued by the Australian government last week, as its first order of business for the new session. Imagine over 100,000 aborigine children taken from their homes under force, placed in abusive group and foster "homes" and stripped of their family connections, their language, their customs. I hope this will never happen again anywhere. Listen to the Happy Guru podcast from Australia to learn more about the Stolen Generation; Duncan has a very inspiring podcast and very extensive notes about this topic.

Though this may seem far away from you, you can still lend your support. Watch today's episode for more in this.

On another note, I voted tonight in the Hawaii caucuses. There was unprecedented voter turnout - four to ten times the average amount in various locations. People are getting off of their couches and taking a role in determining their/our future. I just love that.
