Beach Walk 762 – Whale Instead of Sail on Maui

We were visiting Maui as guests of the Maui Visitors Bureau and were booked for a sailing canoe venture. This was going to be the highlight of my week as you all know how much I love the Hawaiian canoe! But, the wind was in town and the trip was canceled, much to my disappointment.

Maui is not called the "Magic Isle" for nothing though! Since we were already at the beach, we went in for a swim. The water is clear and beautiful so naturally I was underwater straight away. And then I heard something really familiar, but familiar only from my iPod not from "real life."

Sure enough, it was the whales singing to me, "Don't be disappointed Rox! We're out here in the deep water reminding you all is well! Swim in this warm beautiful sea and you'll find fun and pleasure all around you." I cannot tell you how excited I was! In all my years of being underwater and seeing whales from boats, I have never once heard them singing while underwater. It was such a good reminder for all of us on vacation: don't get too attached to any one thing! As Vene said, "there are treasures and mysteries awaiting us" - if we let it all flow.

I was hired by the Maui Visitors Bureau to assemble a team of new media bloggers and podcasters to participate in a week-long press trip to Maui. You are the lucky beneficiaries! In this second episode, filmed on-site at the Ulupalakua Ranch, I introduce you to George Kahumoku, a slack key guitarist and multi-talented person - like so many Hawaiians! You must watch this to learn about his many talents. I love the title of today's episode as it has the rhythm of the Hawaiian language in these long yet simple words. Just say each one slowly as it is written; or do as my friend Shel Israel suggests, and say it 10 times fast!

Beach Walk 757 – Waves Washing Over Us

This walk on the beach in Maui is a type of shadow play and a rare glimpse of seeing Secret Cameraman at work!

This is a little venture into avante garde film-making, as the camera perspective and what you see on screen is a bit unusual. No talking, just walking and some gorgeous waves here to wash away whatever shadows may be dogging any of us. On a side note, I had the most fun interview ever with Dave Moyer and Kym Huynh of Wordcast Conversations and they got me all energized to post a new episode! I'll post the link to it when it goes live.

Rox is back on the beach this week with a little "beachwalks philosophy" debriefing and looking back at the overnight embark on the USS Nimitz. Shane has dropped in a few more clips that we also wanted to share with you. Over the past few decades, it appears the military has learned some things the rest of us are still catching up on. If you provide good training and you have reliable procedures and consequences, then just about anything is doable. The main point stressed to us was that the military exists primarily to prevent war, not win war. The appropriate show of force and the claiming of one's authentic power, can deter the large majority of problems. In recent history, it seems to me more a problem with our civilian leaders than our military leaders in terms of making reasonable decisions. Without rehashing the tired arguments of the past (remember I was a student at Berkeley in the 70's and an antiwar protester and still prefer peace over war), what have you learned from the Nimitz series?

Meet Captain Mike Manazir, who tells us to ask any question, take pictures and videos, talk to the sailors, no restrictions. Right away with the Captain you will get a feeling for the people on board. One of my fellow travelers, Olwen Huxley, summed it up perfectly: I got on the Nimitz "wow, the technology" and got off the Nimitz "wow, the people.

Who knew after all my disco years dancing to the tune of "in the navy" I would be a DV (Distinguished Visitor) on a US Navy aircraft carrier? Who knew a former ant-war protester from UC Berkeley would be invited aboard a war ship, free to roam the ship unsupervised? Shane and I spent an overnight on the USS Nimitz - a 4.5 acre steel beach. We've got several episodes for you, as of course we couldn't go alone! Part One is the getting there, via a COD flight with an arrested landing. This episode starts off with a briefing from Public Affairs Officer Theresa Donnelly; you can follow her (and her boxer!) on Twitter. I have to say it was especially cool having our arrival announced on Twitter too.

It's been a long time since we've been out on the water together. Our friends Eric, Stacey, and Kaile got a new 4-man outrigger canoe. Shane, Eric, and I took it out - saving a seat for you! I have missed being on the water, and hope you enjoy this episode - oh so Hawaii.

Huli means to roll over in Hawaiian, and though we caught several awesome waves, we also caught a 360! It was a great day, made better in my memory by the amazing song, "The Ocean" by Barefoot Truth. I've been conducting a very lackadaisical campaign on Beach Walks over the past three years to change attitudes about bikinis aka the Bikini Liberation Front. We mostly approach them from the point of view of bikini watchers, not bikini wearers. It is so loaded with who should or should not wear one. Well here in Hawaii they are ubiquitous! No matter what kine body you have - it just feels good to have the warm water of the Pacific and the warm sunshine wash over you. Wayne Dyer once said something very apropos here: "What you think of me is none of my business." So if you find yourself wanting to wear a bikini this summer, it just may be that all that needs to get in shape is your mind!

One of the things that is becoming well understood these days is how no one knows everything and how we can really benefit from providing energetic support to each other. One way this plays out, is in how the Beach Walks philosophy has contributed to a new book by Ian Sanders, Juggle! Rethink work, reclaim your life. Now, I have the luxury of seeing some of the ideas I've pondered put onto the page, co-mingled with several great minds! And the opportunity is to continue reflecting and putting more of it into practice - taking ideas into action.

In this episode I talk about Chapter 7 - Get Unplugged. Taking time off from the treadmill of life's ingrained habits and automatic assumptions is a powerful juggler's tip. I am learning from Ian who has transformed his own life. I am hoping my walk catches up with my talk this year.

We watched an episode of The Iconoclasts last night with surfer Laird Hamilton and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder. Both are celebrities of course, and they also are living their true natures, deeply and truly. What if permission isn't required to be yourself? What if the part of us we think is the broken or odd part is actually the truest part? Food for thought for Monday.

I admire Barack Obama's ability to stay cool in public. David Brooks, of the New York Times, pointed this out to me - that in fact over two years of intense campaigning, he did not rant, did not get petty. This sense of resolve and non-ranting in public is a Hawaiian value, onipaʻa, from the the time of the overthrow of the monarchy. It was the motto of King Kamehameha V and Queen Liliʻuokalani. You will find that ranting in public will not get you many results here in the land of Aloha.

"Internet Improves Communication" - or at least it does for some of the people some of the time. It can also intrude on other people's conversations, it can be full of falsehoods. Nonetheless in this episode I am talking about the upside of the internet's tools to connect us and add to our sense of community and ability to know more about each other. The Pew Internet Family and Life Project keeps finding that overall, in the aggregate, more people feel they have better communication with family members than before the internet. I know this to be very true in my family.

I did a show on the latent racist tendencies many of us have a few weeks ago, Beach Walk 707, talking about how deeply racism (and other "-isms") reside within our subconscious. Exploring a little further, if we resist the notion and feel guilty or go into denial, then it lingers. Maybe not feeling so burdened or responsible for things before our time can free us to notice when we are acting under the influence, and choose to act differently now.

More and more brave souls are leaving their "known worlds" for life as an adventure, the kind without a job for a safety net. Decades ago the book appeared, Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow that really knocked loose some hard-formed notions. Still, only one generation has grown up with that message, so it has barely made a dent in our global consciousness. Some people are using volunteering as a step in that direction. Such is the story of my friend BJ Wishinsky who is now at Anita Borg Institute and also Joe Philipson the photographer who is helping to define a whole new sector: social media photographer.

I'd also to thank the many volunteers who helped on Podcamp Hawaii. Judi Clark was both the WordCamp wrangler and the one who helped me track and acknowledge the many volunteers on that event. Kyle Nishioka was the tech and venue manage and did a wonderful job working with our many vendors. Shane Robinson aka Secret Cameraman built the website and set up all of the live streaming, plus created a very cool desktop application that allowed attendees to fill out evaluations on the spot while watching the live stream or following the Twitter stream!

Update: Twitter friend @carakitty also got a jpb at a Vet office after volunteering at the animal shelter.

A good example of the non-linear-ness of the process of change is Dr. James Prochaska's, Stages of Change Theory. He describes 5 stages of "change readiness" - each of which is responsive to certain processes or approaches. People who successfully change a behavior, will not usually progress through the stages in a straight line, but more in a spiral, relapsing some and then moving forward again.

Are you like me? Staying up late working on my computer tends to make me hungry. It seems like I am burning calories, and that warrants having a snack. Well, apparently the brain is tricking us a bit by creating a hunger connection without the usual caloric expenditure. So over time, the less you sleep and the more you are thinking the more likely you are to gaining weight! Guess it is time to use my brain to ignore what my brain is telling my tummy. This research was done at Laval University in Quebec.

So I am catching up on Survivor again. It is quite dramatic how losing a challenge becomes so self-defeating, and in itself seems to trigger a cascade of downward performance. I have been wondering what comes first in this chicken or egg scenario - losing or the loser's mentality? If you really want to play the game, then recognize that it is a game and winning or losing don't matter. If you think of yourself as a competent gamer though, you build your psyche and that builds your body and your creativity and your connectivity. When we adopt the loser state of mind, the ability to compete collapses. Today's title is a little strident - but it just seemed to fit.

Beach Walk 707 – The Race Against Racism

Do you think of yourself as a racist? Chances are no, That doesn't mean you don't have latent racism. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the NY Times that really helps to explain it.

Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously.

The cure? Out yourself when you have a racist thought, even if it's embarrassing. It helps I think to flush up those legacy thoughts that have been passed down from generation to generation, just like, "put a coat on or you'll catch a cold!" Paying attention and breaking the habit - that does work.

New and old are such loaded words - they can be used to manipulate our feelings if we are not paying attention. Like most things, I think it is case-specific. New is not always improved nor does the new necessarily invalidate the old.
