We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true essence of Beach Walks - even though it was not filmed on a beach! It was completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. Today's show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this "punchbowl" of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos.

Beach Walk 756 – The Energy of Language

Does this story feel good? It pays to pay attention to the words coming out of your mouth.

We use words all day everyday yet rarely stop to feel the energy they pack. I think it is the energy that causes confusion, less than the definition sometimes. We assume others think words feel the same way but they often don't! We assume that a "story is just a story" but it's not! It is also the energy from that story. I aim for feel-good energy, so that determines what stories I choose to tell or not these days. What about you? Does re-telling that story, no matter how righteous, make you feel bettor or worse? If you connect with the energy, it may influence where your mouth and mind go today.

Beach Walk 754 – Big Beach, Little Beach

Big Beach, Little Beach; big ideas, small details. We are on a business retreat on Maui, staying at the Hotel Wailea, and filming at Big Beach/Little Beach.

At home we have a small place with low ceilings, and no view. At the Hotel Wailea, we have a large room, high ceilings, and an incredible view! The shift in our thinking as a result in the shift in our environment is providing a contrast that was long overdue for us. It reminds me of the value of alternating between big view and little view.

Programming code is just like cooking - sometimes you can guess the right mix and make a copy of something, but other times you need to know the original ingredients. Knowing when and how to tell the difference? Usually you only learn that on the back side, after you give it a try. I am not a big fan of the "fake it til you make it" school. I prefer authenticity and simple truths. Having said that, I also believe we are each free to try anything we want. If you are selling yourself as something you are not though, seller and buyer be aware.

Beach Walk 738 – Version Control

A few weeks ago I talked about updating the database. And there is a tricky second aspect of that. If you are updating an old version of the database, then you miss out on stuff! This happens, sadly, all the time when more than one person has access to a master database. They work "locally, make a bunch of changes, and everything looks cool. But if they don't connect and send their updates to the main source, then everyone else who uses it is missing something. Or sometimes the db gets moved, and you didn't know, so you are syncing with an old version.

Each of us is also an author of the master database - in addition to noticing others' changes we get to add our own! Voila - we end up with being able to "create our own reality."

Updating my database: servers do it automatically every few minutes in some cases- the Internet is so smart, it knows we are constantly changing!

One of the things I am changing is feeling under-appreciated. I had this awareness that I get my satisfaction and pleasure from what I am doing in the moment. Yet I too often have front-loaded and back-loaded things with expectations. They impact the energy and the experience itself. I am choosing to give up that habit as I am a pleasure seeking person! I have re-purposed the pity pot I used to have into a compost bin where my "I am done with that" thoughts go to be reconfigured. Now I ask myself, “Rox, are things being done to you or for you?” This changes the energy in a heart beat. (Because I understand now it's all for me. And it's all good.)

Our car is 6.5 yrs old but has only 40,000 miles (eh - living on an island!) I have way more miles in my frequent flier accounts than the odometer of the Ford Escape.

Statistics can prove anything. Old Thinking: That’s bad! New Thinking: Use math to my advantage, to help me feel better, so I become untethered to what is holding me back.

Not to lie or manipulate per se, but to use .5 as half full, OR half empty. Both are true. Which interpretation feels better for me for now?

I personally value emptiness as much as fullness - it all depends on the situation.

I love reiterating some of our recurring human experiences with the goal of going easier on ourselves. This episode is a reminder of how stressful it can sometimes be to learn new things, as in the case of my nephew Tyler who is learning to drive. Remember that the brain and quite possibly also the physical circuitry is at work learning new patterns. To realize that some old patterns may be in the process of expanding or being dismantled. And to go slower rather than faster. To repeat as often as needed. To expect delays and lurches forward too!

Freedom and happiness really influence my views on life and what I choose to let go of in order to have the freedom and the happiness.

This whole thread this week actually started with someone in my yoga class complaining about dirty hand prints on the mirrors...and off my mind went to energy discrepancies, to rules that can't be followed, to how powerful negotiation is and we can't have negotiation if we stay stuck in a world of black and white, constructed somewhere in the past.

Binary refers to how computers work: things basically boil down to ones and zeros. It makes for a very black and white appearance. Yet I am meeting more and more geeky guys who have an artful and spiritual side which I consider the opposite of 1-0. There are so many examples in life where drilled down deep or taken out wide, they become the opposite of themselves. You can check out the video on Byteful.com. It seems we are taking on more and more complexity and using tools like mind-mapping that allow us to show relationships that are nuanced than a straight line. It's true even with business models, where there are ways to "get paid" by "paying it forward" or helping someone who then helps someone else who then buys from you. Not so easy to be sure, but our brains appear able to handle it!

I hope you'll celebrate my Dad's 85th birthday with us today. He truly merits the medal for survivor, in so many ways. I never knew what an optimist he was the past few years. As he now deals with five (yes 5) different kinds of cancer, that optimism really plays an apparent role. Let's give a round of applause for Bill Benton and his many contributions to the "Beach Walks philosophy." You can also watch an interview I did with him last spring in Episode 606.

When you are not invested in the results of what you do, you are able to pay attention to what is actually going on. Life does not get much more powerful than that. I am busy pulling Podcamp + Wordcamp Hawaii together. Over the past months, I have watched how volunteers have come and gone, and how the project itself though continues. How people and things show up, just at the moment they are relevant. How futile and frustrating it would have been to start off with a dream that did not allow for both clouds and rainbows!

Balance is one of those concepts that it is easy to be lulled into assuming is always preferable. But in reality, balance has a time and place, as does its opposite! For me, being able to know when balance is preferable or not, helps me manage my energy and my goals too. Today's show was inspired by a Twitter comment from Francis Shepard.

Some people are confident naturally; here are some tips for the rest of us. My friend Chris Brogan recently recorded a podcast about it. (Link removed as the file is no longer available.) Today's episode of Beach Walks (filmed on an amazing day!!) came from my decisions to "swim first" and do the show second. One of the ways I've learned to build confidence is to be able to resist my feelings, and use data to inform my decisions and actions. That pesky #2 personality is frequently there to play the emotion card, which can keep us thinking and feeling "one down."

Beach Walk 666 – It’s Not Too Late to Take a Vacation!

Tell your self and your boss you want a vacation - it helps stave off heart attacks and is linked to direct health benefits! Americans work too much for our well-being. A link has been shown between less vacation and more heart attacks, not to mention lower productivity. Americans appear to be the worst offenders, while our hard-working German counterparts take an average of 35 vacation days a year! Here is Norm Brodsky's article from Inc that I mentioned also. It's a perfect opportunity for us to help each other get unplugged from the knee-jerk response of over-working.
