We meet the loveliest people through Beach Walks. A while ago I met Yoshiko Hino, a viewer from Japan who connected with me on Twitter. Like myself, she has visited Hawaii many times and fell in love with the place! She is now making plans to move here. She is a very talented jewelry designer - you can see the Hawaii influence in her work. You can find her on Twitter @yoshikocat. She also does sales, which is easy to understand as she has a way of connecting with people.

As I have said many times before, "you meet the coolest people on the beach in Hawaiʻi!" Today we met Chris SantaCroce, aka Uber Shaman. It was his birthday, and he was starting the day at the beach with his puppies. He is a renaissance man - doing a number of things with his talents, and in a beach walks kind of way, spreading cheer and consciousness and geekiness to those he meets! To him, I was "that lady who walks the beach?" Yes, whenever I can!

Beach Walk 734 – Updating the Database

Updating my database: servers do it automatically every few minutes in some cases- the Internet is so smart, it knows we are constantly changing!

One of the things I am changing is feeling under-appreciated. I had this awareness that I get my satisfaction and pleasure from what I am doing in the moment. Yet I too often have front-loaded and back-loaded things with expectations. They impact the energy and the experience itself. I am choosing to give up that habit as I am a pleasure seeking person! I have re-purposed the pity pot I used to have into a compost bin where my "I am done with that" thoughts go to be reconfigured. Now I ask myself, “Rox, are things being done to you or for you?” This changes the energy in a heart beat. (Because I understand now it's all for me. And it's all good.)

Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. Scroll down to the bottom of any page to see a list of all the categories. I love this style especially at the beach - somehow the magic of a minute can capture the serenity, the solitude, the vastness of the ocean, the playfulness of children - all without any words or planning at all.

I am practicing getting out of the way, and letting grace happen. Even Lexi stayed off camera for all but a few frames.

Freedom and happiness really influence my views on life and what I choose to let go of in order to have the freedom and the happiness.

This whole thread this week actually started with someone in my yoga class complaining about dirty hand prints on the mirrors...and off my mind went to energy discrepancies, to rules that can't be followed, to how powerful negotiation is and we can't have negotiation if we stay stuck in a world of black and white, constructed somewhere in the past.

We watched an episode of The Iconoclasts last night with surfer Laird Hamilton and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder. Both are celebrities of course, and they also are living their true natures, deeply and truly. What if permission isn't required to be yourself? What if the part of us we think is the broken or odd part is actually the truest part? Food for thought for Monday.

More and more brave souls are leaving their "known worlds" for life as an adventure, the kind without a job for a safety net. Decades ago the book appeared, Do What You Love and The Money Will Follow that really knocked loose some hard-formed notions. Still, only one generation has grown up with that message, so it has barely made a dent in our global consciousness. Some people are using volunteering as a step in that direction. Such is the story of my friend BJ Wishinsky who is now at Anita Borg Institute and also Joe Philipson the photographer who is helping to define a whole new sector: social media photographer.

I'd also to thank the many volunteers who helped on Podcamp Hawaii. Judi Clark was both the WordCamp wrangler and the one who helped me track and acknowledge the many volunteers on that event. Kyle Nishioka was the tech and venue manage and did a wonderful job working with our many vendors. Shane Robinson aka Secret Cameraman built the website and set up all of the live streaming, plus created a very cool desktop application that allowed attendees to fill out evaluations on the spot while watching the live stream or following the Twitter stream!

Update: Twitter friend @carakitty also got a jpb at a Vet office after volunteering at the animal shelter.

A good example of the non-linear-ness of the process of change is Dr. James Prochaska's, Stages of Change Theory. He describes 5 stages of "change readiness" - each of which is responsive to certain processes or approaches. People who successfully change a behavior, will not usually progress through the stages in a straight line, but more in a spiral, relapsing some and then moving forward again.

It seems we are taking on more and more complexity and using tools like mind-mapping that allow us to show relationships that are nuanced than a straight line. It's true even with business models, where there are ways to "get paid" by "paying it forward" or helping someone who then helps someone else who then buys from you. Not so easy to be sure, but our brains appear able to handle it!

Are you like me? Staying up late working on my computer tends to make me hungry. It seems like I am burning calories, and that warrants having a snack. Well, apparently the brain is tricking us a bit by creating a hunger connection without the usual caloric expenditure. So over time, the less you sleep and the more you are thinking the more likely you are to gaining weight! Guess it is time to use my brain to ignore what my brain is telling my tummy. This research was done at Laval University in Quebec.

I hope you'll celebrate my Dad's 85th birthday with us today. He truly merits the medal for survivor, in so many ways. I never knew what an optimist he was the past few years. As he now deals with five (yes 5) different kinds of cancer, that optimism really plays an apparent role. When in fact, we hold the keys, and they are merely in our thoughts, not so much an external reality. So I am catching up on Survivor again. It is quite dramatic how losing a challenge becomes so self-defeating, and in itself seems to trigger a cascade of downward performance. I have been wondering what comes first in this chicken or egg scenario - losing or the loser's mentality? If you really want to play the game, then recognize that it is a game and winning or losing don't matter. If you think of yourself as a competent gamer though, you build your psyche and that builds your body and your creativity and your connectivity. When we adopt the loser state of mind, the ability to compete collapses. Today's title is a little strident - but it just seemed to fit.

Do you think of yourself as a racist? Chances are no, That doesn't mean you don't have latent racism. Nicholas Kristof wrote a piece in the NY Times that really helps to explain it.

Rather, most of the votes that Mr. Obama actually loses belong to well-meaning whites who believe in racial equality and have no objection to electing a black person as president — yet who discriminate unconsciously.

The cure? Out yourself when you have a racist thought, even if it's embarrassing. It helps I think to flush up those legacy thoughts that have been passed down from generation to generation, just like, "put a coat on or you'll catch a cold!" Paying attention and breaking the habit - that does work.

My friend Hiko shared this footage of free diving in the clear waters off Hilo on the Big Island. Check out their monofins and breath-holding abilities - it's the latest cool thing to do underwater. And I want to do it! In one of life's little synchronicities, I read an article on this same topic int he magazine Hana Hou - traveling back to Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines last month. They have some beautiful photos.

Writing up the notes for today I realize yesterday was about "distort" and today is about "accurate." This political season has a lot of people tossing around terms like right, wrong, stupid, smart, etc. These things feel good to say but are generally not provable. They are full of loopholes, shall we say. But when you are very specific, either about descriptions or your opinions/feelings, then you will almost always be accurate and spot on.

I discovered the McKinsey, the consulting firm, now releases some of their white papers as podcasts. I like the somewhat formal, research-driven, unemotional yet yet not cold-hearted or partisan perspectives. The one on Hidden Flaws in Strategy I found insightful, as it included several practical examples of how we become vulnerable to the emotional filters that can be applied to decision making. How true that what we own, often appears to be more valuable to us, than it is to others. "Like new" does not equal "used." Things like this are not a problem once we realize the underlying and built-in biases we have.

When you are not invested in the results of what you do, you are able to pay attention to what is actually going on. Life does not get much more powerful than that. I am busy pulling Podcamp + Wordcamp Hawaii together. Over the past months, I have watched how volunteers have come and gone, and how the project itself though continues. How people and things show up, just at the moment they are relevant. How futile and frustrating it would have been to start off with a dream that did not allow for both clouds and rainbows!

Bottom line: when you have more options there can be less stress. The flip side is that it takes more time, more consciousness, more energy to discover and create the options And having way too many options can create its own form of stress at the other end of the spectrum. But for now, for today, this episode is about how a parent can give a child a few choices enabling then to be true to their inner quirky self without having to be an ungracious rebel.
