This is a little venture into avante garde film-making, as the camera perspective and what you see on screen is a bit unusual. No talking, just walking and some gorgeous waves here to wash away whatever shadows may be dogging any of us. On a side note, I had the most fun interview ever with Dave Moyer and Kym Huynh of Wordcast Conversations and they got me all energized to post a new episode! I'll post the link to it when it goes live.

At home we have a small place with low ceilings, and no view. At the Hotel Wailea, we have a large room, high ceilings, and an incredible view! The shift in our thinking as a result in the shift in our environment is providing a contrast that was long overdue for us. It reminds me of the value of alternating between big view and little view.

I am out of town and left my intended footage back on my main hard drive so I found this remnant from last winter! It's got a mood to it I think, and it's dedicated to dog lovers and long shadows everywhere. The sound is minimal - just the sweet romancing rhythms of gentle late afternoon waves. Co-mingled with Lexi's steady breathing, and a reminder from my friend Lola Jones to "breathe for pleasure." I hope we at Beach Walks can cast a shadow of grace on you today. It's been a long time since we've been out on the water together. Our friends Eric, Stacey, and Kaile got a new 4-man outrigger canoe. Shane, Eric, and I took it out - saving a seat for you! I have missed being on the water, and hope you enjoy this episode - oh so Hawaii.

Lumiere is a film tradition involving a fixed camera, no editing whatsoever, and typically even no sound. I left the sound in though as I love hearing the waves. Scroll down to the bottom of any page to see a list of all the categories. I love this style especially at the beach - somehow the magic of a minute can capture the serenity, the solitude, the vastness of the ocean, the playfulness of children - all without any words or planning at all.

I am practicing getting out of the way, and letting grace happen. Even Lexi stayed off camera for all but a few frames.

I am actually in New York as I write this, and it gave me so much pleasure to be immersed in some archive files and music I found when putting this episode together. If you've been to Hawaii you've likely heard this style of music either on the radio or while sipping mai tai's at the beach watching the sunset. Or maybe as you view Kanoe Miller dance the hula at the Halekulani Hotel. It conveys so beautifully the feeling of those swaying palm trees; I just love it.

If you watch this show regularly, you know that I like teasing apart the little nuances and discrepancies in how we use words, the language. It packs so much subtle energy, and that energy can actually interfere with the pursuit of happiness IMO. One example is the difference between compromise and negotiation. In compromise, it looks like two people facing (off) against each other, with the problem in the middle. Both people typically feel like they have to give up something in order to solve the problem in the middle, to save the relationship, which is also in the middle. In negotiation, people can sit side by side and face the problem/relationship together, looking to see how much of a win each can gain from creative problem-solving. Negotiation is deliciously devoid of tit for tat energy.

Turns out I felt a little self-conscious on the crowded beach in Florida and with the sun in my eyes, could not see the little camera screen either, so this is a no-talkie episode. I was thinking about that saying, "Silence is golden" anyway, and will just keep it for another day. I recorded a voice over, but the energy just felt funky; I hope you enjoy the waves, a sight and sound that so far I have not tired of.
